Debate: The Capitalist as Philanthropist
The mark of a great piece of journalism or though isn’t how definitive its answers are or how prophetic it may come to be. Rather, it’s potential comes from the ability to get a conversation started. It doesn’t purport to be the end all, but rather the opening bell of a productive conversation.
Earlier this summer, Andy Kessler penned an opinion in the Wall Street Journal, arguing that the capitalist is simultaneously the ultimate philanthropist. He take a bold stance, arguing that the wealthiest capitalists, by virtue of their production, combat inequality far more efficiently and fairly than any single foundation ever can. His case study? Henry Ford for the capitalists, the Ford Foundation for the philanthropists/charities.
Naturally, this got a lot of minds buzzing. A series of letters made for amazing response from Mr. Kessler’s piece. Among them was a calm rebuttal from the Ford Foundation itself!
